Estimating Mean Residence Time of Groundwater in Central Basin/Erbil using Environmental Isotopes

The average time of input water needs to recharge the groundwater basin and reach a catchment outlet, whether it follows vertical or horizontal flow direction, is known as mean residence (MRT). This study aims identify theory concepts estimation MRT in well using environmental isotope technique. For this purpose, spatiotemporal data oxygen-18 precipitation Erbil city were taken from Global Network Isotopes Precipitation (GNIP). Furthermore, named (HWL) that located at central selected. Because δ18O measured natural tracer for groundwater, sample analyzed by cavity ring down spectrometer. derivation sine wave regression was used measure δ 18O variations both groundwater. Decreasing isotopic amplitude due phase shift (precipitation) which 5.74 ‰ output (groundwater) 0.277 can solve equation estimate aquifer. Results showed that, temporal response inputs, HWL estimated 1202 days. concluded spent about days recharging well. 2The comparison range -10.1 -2.4 per mill rainfall. These values varied -7.05 -6.86 when inters are typically affected reflection current state climates.
